But there is an ingenious and cost-effective solution to protect their plants from pesky bugs, vegetable oil. 

This simple kitchen staple is proving to be a powerful ally in the fight against plant-eating insects, offering a natural and safe alternative to chemical pesticides.

Vegetable oil, when mixed with water and a small amount of soap, can create an effective insect repellent spray. 

This mixture works by coating the insects, disrupting their ability to breathe, and ultimately repelling them from the plants.

To prepare the vegetable oil insect repellent, combine one cup of vegetable oil with one tablespoon of mild liquid soap. 

Then, take two teaspoons of the oil-soap mixture and dilute it in one quart (approximately one litre) of water. 

Pour this solution into a spray bottle and apply it directly to the plants, focusing on areas where insects are most active. 

Ensure you cover both the tops and undersides of leaves, as this is where many bugs tend to hide and lay eggs.

When sprayed onto the plants, the oil forms a thin film over the insects’ bodies.
