A savvy gardener has divulged the ultimate hack for eradicating stubborn ivy, and it's a bargain at just 30p.

The lush foliage of English ivy allows it to thrive in low-light conditions, often outcompeting other plants in the garden.

Its aerial roots can be particularly destructive when they latch onto buildings, potentially causing structural damage if they worm their way into cracks and joints.

For those grappling with this tenacious plant, online gardening communities are buzzing with advice.

One individual sought wisdom on the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook group, querying: "What's a good way to get rid of unwanted ivy?"

Fellow enthusiasts were quick to respond, with many suggesting a simple yet effective method: chop down the ivy and apply bleach.

One user commented: "Cut it off at the base, cut slits in the base, pour neat bleach over the stump, then cover it with a bag and tape it up to protect wildlife from the bleach," explaining that "the plant will take the bleach down to its roots and kill it completely."

Another gardening enthusiast said: "I have killed very old invasive ivy that has crawled up next doors house and literally thought would be impossible to get rid of.

"A large bottle of bleach killed the lot within days, but it was mainly gone overnight."

Snother advised: "Chop it at the base and remove as much as you can, then add bleach over it.", reported the Mirror.

A savvy Facebook user claimed bleach is the "only way" to eradicate ivy permanently, saying: "Cut it as close to the ground and pour bleach on the roots.

"It will burn it and the ivy will die. Don't pull off the large branches of a wall, cut off at different parts and it will fade and die off in a few days."

However, caution is urged when using bleach as it can instantly destroy other plants it touches.

Bargain hunters take note bleach is available for 30p from supermarkets like Asda and Lidl.

Make sure to not put bleach in any other areas of the garden as it will kill everything it touches.
