The kitchen is often seen as the most important room in the home, and many strive to make it aesthetically appealing.

However, this can be expensive but luckily, painting kitchen cupboards can make your space look brand new, according to Pat Gilham at MyJobQuote.co.uk.

The expert said: “It’s also worth considering painting the inside of your kitchen cupboards for a unique look and an extra pop of colour.”

1. Remove the hardware

To start with remove all of the handles and knobs from the cupboards and drawers.

Use some pieces of masking tape to protect the glass and hinges and put down some dust sheets to protect the other parts of the kitchen.

2. Wash the cabinets

Next, wash the cabinets with a strong detergent to remove any grease and dirt which may be present.

The expert said this will help to get a smooth canvas to work with.

Pat explained: “Wipe away any of the remaining soap residue with a damp cloth and then allow the cupboards to air dry.”

3. Prepare the cabinets

Once the cabinets are dry, it is time to sand them down with some fine sandpaper. Then, fill in any imperfections with some ready-mixed filler before sanding the surfaces down again.

4. Apply the paint

Once the primer has dried, it is time to apply the paint. The expert recommended applying two coats before analysing and seeing if it needs another.

Once the first coat of paint is dry, make sure to sand down the surface to create a “smooth and professional-looking finish.”

Pat added: “Wipe any dust with a damp cloth and allow the cupboards to dry. Then, apply the second coat of paint and allow this to dry.”

It’s best to use a mini roller when painting the cupboards to ensure an even coat.

5. Finishing touches

When the second coat of paint has dried, carefully remove the masking tape before putting the knobs and handles back on.

If you fancy, swap the handles out for new ones for an even more elevated look.

The DIY expert added: “Once you’ve finished, remove the dust sheets and tidy up. Then, you can step back and admire your gorgeous new kitchen cabinets.”
