Peace lilies are easy plant to care for when you get all of the essential care tips correct, but they are also often dubbed “dramatic” plants which wilt seemingly overnight. Typically, how happy your peace lily is depends on how much light it is getting and the amount of water.

In a Reddit forum dedicated to peace lily care, one houseplant enthusiast explained how they have had “several” peace lilies last for “years” by looking for one key sign. They claim that your peace lily will show you when it needs to be watered, so you no longer need to guess.

“‘I've kept several for years and only ever water them when they begin to sag a little,” explained the Reddit poster.

They added that peace lilies are strong plants which have the ability to “bounce back”.

A second Reddit user added: “Water it when the leaves droop, it should be once a week or so just be mindful and watch your plant it’ll show you when.” [SIC]

How often should you water a peace lily?

In short, peace lilies need to be watered around once a week and they usually like around one inch of water. You can tell if your peace lily is thirsty by looking at its leaves. Droopy or wilting leaves are typically a sign that your peace lily is begging for a drink.

However, you can also tell when your peace lily needs watering by keeping an eye on the soil. You do not want to let the soil dry out for long periods.

You can test the soil by using your finger and feeling. If the top inch of soil is dry to the touch this is a sign that it is time to water your peace lily. In winter, they may need slightly less water than during the summer months.

How much sunlight does a peace lily need?

Sunlight is another crucial factor for peace lily survival. Though peace lilies need sunlight to survive, too much sun could have a detrimental impact.

They thrive in bright, unfiltered, indirect sunlight but placing them in direct sunlight can burn their leaves.

Peace lilies do very well in low-light situations, and can flower with as little as two to four hours of sunlight each day.
