As summer holidays approach, many plant enthusiasts are concerned about how to keep their green companions hydrated in their absence.

Gardening expert Simon Akeroyd has shared a simple and effective method to ensure your plants remain well-watered while you're away, using items you likely already have at home.

Akeroyd’s innovative solution involves creating a homemade drip irrigation system using a plastic bottle and a few other household items.

This method promises to keep your plants healthy and hydrated without the need for expensive equipment or complicated setups.

Here’s how you can make Simon Akeroyd’s drip irrigation system:

Prepare the Bottle:

Start by lighting a joss stick.

Carefully use the lit joss stick to burn a small hole low down on the side of a plastic bottle.

Then, burn another hole in the bottle's lid.

Insert Cotton Buds:

Cut a cotton bud in half. Insert one half into the hole on the side of the bottle and the other half into the hole in the lid.

The cotton buds act as wicks, helping to control the flow of water.

Fill with Water:

Fill the bottle with water.

Adjust the Flow:

Check the speed of the water flow.

You can adjust the flow rate by pulling the cotton bud in the lid out slightly.

The more you pull it out, the faster the water will drip.

Place the System:

Once you’ve achieved the desired flow rate, place your homemade drip irrigation system next to your plants.

Make sure the water drips slowly and steadily onto the soil.

This ingenious hack ensures a consistent supply of water to your plants, preventing them from drying out while you're enjoying your holiday.

The slow drip system is particularly beneficial for plants that require regular moisture, as it provides a steady and controlled release of water directly to the roots.

Not only is this method cost-effective, but it also encourages sustainable practices by reusing plastic bottles.

It’s a win-win for both your plants and the environment.
