The Breslin in New York review: A restaurant that serves comfort food of the highest order
A FEW weeks ago I was very fortunate to have an opportunity to spend the weekend in New York City, and to dine with my friend, Richard Starr, the Managing Counsel of Amex.
The Breslin is located in the Ace Hotel in a fashionable area of New York
As we were going for brunch, he recommended The Breslin Bar and Dining Room, which is located in the Ace Hotel in a fashionable area of New York.
He told me that I would feel right at home, as The Breslin (as it is called) is essentially a British gastro-pub transplanted to New York City.
And so it is.
The décor is just that – British bar room – with dark, yummy, wood panelling and charming waiters, and a particularly nice Maître D’.

There was so much good food on several plates that we did not know where to start or stop, so I am afraid we not only had breakfast, but lunch and dinner, all in one meal
The restaurant is owned by Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield.
April is the chef, and in turn is known for meat, so there is plenty of it on the menu, even at breakfast.
We started with banana walnut bread and a sweet potato pecan muffin, both of which were absolutely delicious, and the generous sized portions meant they could have been a light breakfast all by themselves.
We, however, had come to try the food, so we followed with a sourdough pancake accompanied by berries and coconut sugar, and a seafood sausage with chives.
The Breislin presents delicious dessert on its menu
As the speciality of the house is charcoal grilled lamb burger, we could not resist it, and Richard particularly liked his thrice-cooked chips.
Because we were in a meat restaurant, I ordered the chargrilled skirt steak with fried eggs and tomatillo salsa, which was perfectly cooked, but of course too much of a good thing.
Using the excuse that we had come to try the food, we also ordered another speciality of the house – the homemade pork sausages – which had been acclaimed in many New York reviews.
There was so much good food on several plates that we did not know where to start or stop, so I am afraid we not only had breakfast, but lunch and dinner, all in one meal.
There were some delicious desserts on the menu, so we had to try them as well, and chocolate caramel tart and corn and blueberry cake were the ones that made the cut.
If I had had my way, I would have stayed for the whole day and eaten every dish on the menu, as they all looked and sounded amazing.
True comfort food, which indeed made us very comfortable.
