Several variations of the classic custard cream biscuit have hit supermarket shelves in recent years - from strawberry to lemon, and orange to coconut.

Rarely has an alternative version of the Bourbon appeared, however, but step forward Sainsbury's - who has adapted the classic chocolate treat in a version it can call it's own.

Revealed in an Instagram post by New Foods UK (@newfoodsuk), the new offering - Bourbon Twists - features a Black Forest flavoured cream filling in the place of the regular chocolate inside.

"Wow, these are super strong in flavour, the cherry taste works so well with the chocolate biscuit!" declared New Foods UK. The biscuits are available in 150g packets for just 65p, and are suitable for vegetarians.

"Oh these are really nice," one shopper lucky enough to sample them gushed in response. "Great to dunk." A second enthused: "I’m obsessed with these."

A third added in anticipation: "These are in my basket for my delivery next week!" Whilst a fourth Instagram user appeared equally as eager, adding: "Waiting for these to come to my local branch."

Elsewhere, another person contemplated: "This would actually get me enjoying Bourbons. I generally find them a very run of the mill biscuit."

Sainsbury's has also been busy rolling out a further edition of the Bourbon Twists. Caramel hit stores recently too at the same low price. In addition, the supermarket giant has created new versions of its custard creams, which come in gingerbread and peaches and cream flavours. They follow the apple pie custard creams, which were successfully launched in late 2023.

Earlier this year, a study from the team at Saga Holidays rounded up the most packed biscuits in a British tourist's suitcase. Nearly 30% of Britons have said they couldn't go on hoiday without biscuits.

Bourbons and custard creams proved the eighth and fifth most popular biscuits respectively, in a list topped by chcocolate digestives (first), plain digestives and McVitie's Hobnobs.

Also making the top 10 were rich tea, gingernuts, shortbread, jaffa cakes and Jammie Dodgers.
