Diesel cars with highest NOx emissions revealed - Do you own one of these cars?
NEW research into which car manufacturer produces the most NOx has revealed which brands are the biggest air polluters.
Diesel cars have come under fire recently as the Government looks to introduce initiatives and schemes to reduce their usage, due to their high emissions output.
Chancellor Philip Hammond is planning an ‘appropriate’ taxation of diesel cars which he is likely to announce in the Autumn after diesel cars were emitted from the Spring budget.
Brits are outraged by the new initiatives to punish diesel car owners because the 2001 Labour Government encouraged people to opt for them due to their lower CO2 output.
The highest NOX emitters by car brand have been revealed
The latest tax rules will also target high-polluting diesel cars with their inflated first year rate.
New research by Which? analysed 278 diesel cars from leading global car manufacturers between between 2012 and 2016, testing average NOx emissions alongside official Euro 5 and more recent Euro 6 limits - which are set at 0.18g/km and 0.08g/km respectively.
These test have been conducted to highlight which manufacturers are the highest polluters and may inform your future purchasing decisions.
The tests found that all of the 16 diesel Renault cars tested had NOx emissions that were up to four times higher for Euro 5 and nine times above Euro 6 limits - 0.73g/km and 0.72g/km respectively.
Many have a long way to go in cleaning up their act
Nissan, a brand that partners with Renault, were also among the highest polluters with all six cars tested having an average NOx emissions of 0.8g/km.
Jeep were also among the cars producing the highest emissions, with the two Euro 5 cars tested emitting on average a whopping 1.735g/km of NOX, which is nine and a half times the Euro 5 limit they met in official tests.
On the other end of the scale the 33 BMW and BMW-owned Mini cars tested had some of the lowest emissions for diesel cars
Brand averages for NOx emissions (Euro 5 and Euro 6)
BMW cars faired among the best in the test
Averages for BMW were 0.41g/km from Euro 5 cars and 0.14g/km from Euro 6 cars.
Despite the high emission rates exceeding EU limits, overall diesel cars are cleaner than they have ever been.
However, in Which?’s findings there are certain car makers emitting significantly more than others.
Jeep is amongst the top polluters, according to the research
Renault scored among the worst in the research
Richard Headland, Which? magazine editor, said: “While our tests show that some car manufacturers are making progress on reducing the amount of toxic emissions from their models, many have a long way to go in cleaning up their act.
"We hope that the improved official tests being brought in later this year will more clearly name and shame those manufacturers that are failing to meet their obligation to lower emissions."
