Classic car expert shares bargains at auction, including 'really quirky' Fiat for £3,600

Drivers looking at getting behind the wheel of their first classic have been recommended three models which often cost less than £5,000 to buy.

A classic car expert has taken to YouTube to showcase some of the best bargains that went under the hammer at a recent auction, many of which were priced at under £5,000.

Mitch runs the YouTube channel Mk2 Mitch and regularly posts videos in which he takes a look around motor auctions and classic car events in addition to showcasing his second-generation Ford Fiesta.

In a recent video, Mitch visits Anglia Car Auctions to look at some of the cars being sold, including an economical Fiat 126, which sold for just £3,600.

He explained: "We've got a 1973 Fiat 126. I've looked around a couple of these before and I'm always surprised at how small these little things are. This rare, very early UK Fiat 126 was purchased by the vendor two years ago, following several years of being museum displayed.

"It's a really quirky little thing. I really do think this is a true, honest example. It's not mint by any means, but you can jump in this and drive it, and it's offered as 'no reserve'."

Enjoying an incredibly lengthy production run from 1972 to 2000, the 126 replaced the iconic Fiat 500 as the brand's smallest model.

Like its predecessor, the 126 featured a rear-mounted engine that produced just 23bhp, meaning it took more than 40 seconds to accelerate from 0-60mph but gave the little Fiat impressive fuel economy figures for the time.

Whilst the Fiat 126 proved to be a success all over Europe, it was particularly popular in Poland, where it was affectionately given the nickname 'maluch', meaning 'little one'.

Later in the video, Mitch shows drivers looking for a sportier classic that they can get behind the wheel of an incredibly clean 1998 Citroen Saxo VTS, selling for £4,100 at the auction.

He added: "How about this for a hot hatch that you don't see on the UK roads anymore? Here we have a rare, early Citroen Saxo VTS. This is a 1998 car, finished in the unusual colour of Magenta, and it's also had just three keepers, the current one being since 2013.

"It's in lovely condition both inside and out, as you can see, it's looking in really good original condition. I'm loving those really striking seats and matching door cards. There's also a sunroof, which doesn't seem to have any rust or rot around it."

Finally, Mitch takes a look at a 1986 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet, which has just been restored and sold for a very reasonable £4,800.

He continued: "The description states that this Golf was taken off the road back in 2012, and the vendor purchased this in 2019. It wasn't then issued with an MOT certificate until 2020, but it has had a full respray. I must say, the paintwork is absolutely lovely, and it's benefited from a reconditioned gearbox, new tyres, a cambelt, new brakes and a service.

"It's got the 1.8-litre engine that was also fitted to the Golf GTI. Now, as we have a scan around the engine bay you can see it hasn't been cleaned up for the auction but it's in a fairly reasonable state. It has got 72,000 miles recorded and plenty of MOT. It's a nice little car."
