Drivers urged to follow one of the 'most effective' methods to improve economy over 50mph

With more motorists set to take summer road trips, a driving expert has shared a helpful tip that can reduce fuel consumption significantly on motorways.

The vehicle component retailer LKQ Euro Car Parts has shared a number of tips that can help motorists lower the fuel consumption of their car.

Whilst the average price of petrol and diesel is slowly declining, many drivers are still looking for ways in which they can save at the pumps.

A spokesperson for LKQ Euro Car Parts suggested that drivers travelling on high speed roads, such as motorways, should make sure all windows are up to make their vehicle more aerodynamic.

They advised: "In summer months, it's tempting to roll down the car window for some fresh air and cool breeze. When you're driving at high speeds, however, keeping your windows or sunroof open can create resistance, meaning the engine will need to work harder to counteract the drag, resulting in increased fuel consumption.

"Because of this, keeping your windows closed is one of the most effective ways to improve fuel efficiency, especially when travelling above 50mph."

Another way in which drivers are able to improve the fuel economy of their vehicle is by trying to stay at a consistent speed.

Whilst this can be easier said than done in built up areas, such as towns and cities, slowing down and accelerating will naturally increase the amount of fuel being consumed by the engine.

Generally, drivers can get some of the best fuel economy figures out of their vehicle by travelling at a steady 30mph wherever it is possible.

Similarly, LKQ Euro Car Parts also suggested that drivers looking to reduce the fuel consumption of their vehicle lowered their speed whenever they can.

On fast-moving motorways and dual carriageways, studies have found that motorists travelling at 80mph use around 25 percent more fuel than those driving at 70.

However, drivers can improve their fuel economy even more by travelling at between 55 to 65mph as the engine will be running at a slower and less strenuous rate.

Finally, the company recommended that understanding when drivers should avoid using their air conditioning system can also help them to save fuel.

Whilst the summer months mean that more motorists are set to turn on their air conditioning to stay cool, the chilling feature can put more strain on the engine.

As a result, LKQ Euro Car Parts advised drivers to roll down the windows at lower speeds, only turning the aircon on when they reach speeds of more than 50mph.
