BGT: Amanda and Alesha brand act 'corny and cheesy'

Britain's Got Talent star Lewis Fuller is preparing to take his new show to Edinburgh as part of the Fringe Festival just over a year after his singing magician act made the semi-finals of the contest. Although he had enjoyed a long career before appearing on the programme he admits that after the show ends it still looms large in the lives of those who appear on it.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk he recalled: "Anyone who goes on it [Britain's Got Talent] for the first two or three months afterwards it's crazy. It's a bit manic because it's fresh. You're sort of the new people for the scene, and obviously more so if you're in the final," he ruminated.

"[But] I was around and I've been around this industry now doing it for 10 years so I had a long time career before BGT. So I was always busy. And then that obviously boosted my profile after the show.

"I've always dreamed of doing the Edinburgh Fringe and I just pushed myself. It was partly, I would say [the] BGT [profile] and then partly myself really. I just went: 'Right, let's make it happen!'"

Although it is his first time at the Edinburgh Fringe, having wanted to bring a show to it for 15 years, Lewis is playing one of the most coveted venues in the city, The Gilded Ballroom, with his show Ungentlemanly Conduct. His name will be added to the roster of huge names who have played there in the past including Dylan Moran, Rhona Cameron, Tommy Tiernan, Peter Kay, Bill Bailey and Tim Minchin.

Inspired by Guy Richie's Netlflix show The Gentlemen it uses magic, music, comedy and some "dangerous stunts" to tell the story of an entertainer who gets involved with some "dodgy geezers".

The show sounds hugely elaborate and also includes knife throwing mind reading and Lewis acknowledges he is "super excited about it".

Had he bombed on Britain's Got Talent it could all have been so different, however. Simon Cowell makes no secret when he dislikes an act and Lewis was hitting him with not one but two things to possibly criticise him about - his magic and his singing.

"I didn't really think about that to be completely honest," he confessed. "I didn't even think of it in the slightest I was just excited to do it, and I just, I thought: 'You know what, what better place to debut it than on the biggest talent competition there is'.

"I sort of was at the point where I thought: "Let's take a risk. Let's do it. It's gonna go very right or very wrong!'

While he didn't bowl over judge Amanda Holden in his first auditon the other three judges, Simon, Bruno Tonioli and Alesha Dixon put him through to the semi-final.

The singing magician made the semi-final and wowed during that second appearance with a nine-minute appearance that included mind reading and teleportation alongside his trademark singing.

This begs the question if music mogul Simon had singled out his vocal performance and offered him a record contract if he dropped the magic what would he have done?

"If you've got someone like Simon who wants to sign you, I probably wouldn't think about it too much. I'd probably say yes," he laughed.

Lewis Fuller is running a London preview of his show Ungentlemanly Conduct on 26 July at The Magic Circle. He will be Downstairs at The Gilded Balloon Edinburgh as part of the Fringe from 31 July – 25 August 2024. Tickets are available here.
