LBC host Iain Dale has revealed his surgery was "nearly abandoned" after a gall bladder operation took almost four times longer than expected.

Iain had been receiving treatment at private Benenden Hospital in Kent when complications arose. He'd been scheduled to have his gall bladder removed, but there was a high level of infection present, which caused disruption.

He revealed that his surgeon was one of the best in Britain, but that his procedure had still been tricky. Iain is now desperate to get back behind the microphone as he waits to recover sufficiently to get back to the radio studio.

The popular presenter shared the latest health update to his X account today, admitting the ordeal had been "a little more than expected". "I should have realised when I arrived at the hospital at 7am and there was massive thunderclap!" he exclaimed.

"Had the operation to remove gallbladder at 8.30am. The part that should have taken 30-40 mins actually took 2 hours and they nearly abandoned it." Graphically explaining the reason for the delays, he continued: "The sludge was severely impacted and there was more infection than anticipated."

However, he reassuringly added: "The surgeon is one of the best in the country at this operation and he persevered.

"He’s just been to see me and asked why I hadn’t had anything done before now because the issue has been there for several years."

Iain added incredulously that he had "no idea" until late July that there was anything untoward going on.

The LBC star is now confined to a strict diet of "soup and jelly" for the next two days.

However, he revealed that while his stomach area feels "tender", he is experiencing "discomfort rather than overt pain".

"Thanks to everyone who has sent a lovely message. It really does mean a lot to know there are people who genuinely care about me!" he continued.

"Hope to go home in a few hours. And thanks to all at @benenden_hosp who have cared for me so well. I couldn’t have asked for more.

"Now I just need to concentrate on the recovery from the op so I can get in front of that microphone again! Xx."
