Wimbledon star bought replica trophy in gift shop after admitting 'zero' chance of winning

One Wimbledon star confirmed that he would walk away with a small piece of silverware at this year's tournament.

Stan Wawrinka revealed that he bought a miniature replica of the Wimbledon trophy inside one of the gift shops on the grounds, having already admitted that there was “zero” chance of the Swiss star winning a SW19 title.

Wawrinka is just missing the British Slam from his trophy cabinet, having won the Australian, French and US Opens throughout his illustrious career. But Wimbledon has continued to elude the 39-year-old, though he still has a chance in 2024 after defeating Brit Charles Broom 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the first round.

He has never gone beyond the quarter-finals on the Wimbledon grass, however, and has been resigned to the belief that he will not be able to complete the set of Major titles. But Wawrinka’s commiseration has led to him making a purchase in one of the on-site gift shops to ease the pain.

“I went to the shop to buy it, to have the small one at home,” Wawrinka admitted on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast. “Yes, to have the four. At least I have the four at home.”

He joked that he will be lining up his French, US and Australian Open titles with the miniature replica Wimbledon one at home. “All the other Slams and then just the tiny one,” he explained. “But I have it.”

Wawrinka, who recently hit out at the lateness of the Wimbledon schedule-makers, takes on world No. 33 Gael Monfils in the second round and still has a chance to finally break his duck and render his earlier purchase redundant.

But 12 months ago Wawrinka admitted that he did not think there was a chance he would win Wimbledon, despite reaching the third round last year for the first time his two quarter-final appearances in 2014 and 2015.

“There’s zero opportunity to win Wimbledon for me, I think,” the Swiss star said after beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry last year. “I’m happy to have won today again. I think it was (a) great match. I’m playing better each match, and as I say, I think it’s an honour to play Novak (Djokovic - his next match) here.

“I was missing that on my career to play him in the Grand Slam in Wimbledon. That’s the last (place) I never played him, and it’s going to be a difficult challenge.”

Wawrinka’s 2023 campaign was ended at the hands of Djokovic, but should he defeat Monfils on Wednesday there will be a third-round clash with either Grigor Dimitrov or Juncheng Shang waiting if Wawrinka wants to eat his own words and have the real trophy alongside his replica.
