Carlos Alcaraz made his priorities clear as he interrupted Annabel Croft during his on-court interview at Wimbledon. The world No. 3 survived a massive scare and came back to beat Frances Tiafoe in five sets.

After spending almost four hours on court, the reigning champion missed the beginning of Spain's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Germany.

And when Croft reminded him of the football, he stopped her in her tracks to ask an important question of his own.

Alcaraz needed three hours and 53 minutes to get past the 29th seed in the third round. The world No. 3 was just a few points away from crashing out and ending his title defence but he played a near-perfect fourth set tiebreak before racing through the decider.

After recovering to win 4-6 6-2 4-6 7-6(2) 6-2, the reigning champion addressed the Centre Court crowd and BBC TV viewers in an on-court interview with Croft. Alcaraz was happy to speak about Tiafoe and his team but the mood quickly shifted when he was asked about Spain's Euros clash.

"I can't let you go without mentioning a certain football match that's taking place right now. Spain against Germany," she started, before the 21-year-old had to interrupt.

"How is the score? How is the score?" a frantic Alcaraz replied, whipping his head around to see if anyone could give him the answer. "Has anyone got the score? When I last looked I think it was still 0-0" Croft added, before they were both informed that there had still been no goals.

Resuming the interview, she asked Alcaraz: "Is it the case of a quick shower, are you going to try and get to watch it?" And the three-time Grand Slam champion's response came as no surprise.

"Yes of course. I’m [going] straight to put the match and support Spain. I finished 30 minutes [too late] so I’m gonna go for it and let’s see how it’s gonna be," he smiled.

It will be Alcaraz's turn to feel the tension of supporting his favourite team after his own coaching camp were put through a rollercoaster during his five-setter against Tiafoe. "They always tell me that they suffer more than me," he said of his team.

"I mean, watching from the box, having the feeling that they can’t do anything is really difficult to deal with. But I mean, this is really helpful support, having my family, having my ream over there. A lot of people are with us here and to hear come on, let’s go, go for it, one more ball, one more point from them is always helpful and probably without them matches like this is impossible to win."
