Jack Carlin was involved in a dramatic last-lap crash in the Olympic men's keirin final on a day of mixed fortunes for Team GB at the velodrome. The 27-year-old was hoping to claim another medal on the last day of the Games but a slow start left him with plenty of work to do.

Carlin was running in last place heading into the final lap and made a desperate attempt to gain some positions by surging around the outside of the field. While the riders were racing around the last corner, Japanese rider Shinji Nakano lost control of his bike which sparked a terrifying crash involving multiple athletes.

Nakano ended up taking out Carlin at full speed, leaving them sprawled across the track as Dutch rider Harrie Lavreysen took the gold medal. Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom of Malaysia was also caught up in the mayhem and was seen dragging himself over the finish line after coming off his bike.

Carlin appeared to be in some discomfort and stayed down for a while, with several members of Team GB's medical team rushing to his aid. He eventually climbed to his feet after being thoroughly examined and was helped as he walked to the medical centre for additional checks.

It came after Neah Evans narrowly avoided a huge collision after she was dismounted during the women's omnium scratch race. The 34-year-old was nearly hit at speed by another rider on the last lap after losing her balance and tumbling down the banked final turn.

Evans ended up flat on her back and took a few moments to compose herself before gingerly climbing back to her feet. She eventually got back on her bike to cross the finish line in last place when the race had long since finished.

Furthermore, moments later, Hamish Turnbull suffered a scary fall in the men's keirin and was treated immediately by medics.

It was a better day at the velodrome for Emma Finucane, who made history by claiming the bronze medal in the women's sprint. Her triumph saw her become the first female British athlete to win three medals at an Olympics, helping Team GB to surpass their medal tally from Tokyo three years ago.

Speaking about her achievement following the end of the race, Finucane said: "You don't think about it in the moment and for me it is about inspiring young kids to get on the track and to give it a go. I am living my teenage dream and I love every second of it, but this is my job and I wouldn't change it for the world."
