Team GB cyclist Hamish Turnbull suffered a frightening crash in the men's keirin event at the Paris 2024 Olympics which brought a disappointing end to his hopes of winning a medal.

The 25-year-old hit the deck after turning quickly to try and avoid Germany's Lucas Spiegel, who had lost control of his bicycle and crashed in front of him.

Medics immediately rushed to the Briton's aid as he writhed in pain on the floor, with his Team GB outfit ripped to shreds on the back from the impact of the fall.

He was able to get to his feet, although Turnbull looked in some discomfort as he left the track. Turnbull could be seen walking away gingerly with help from medical staff.

He was estimated to have been travelling at a speed of around 49.5 mph (79.8kph) at the time of the crash, with all five cyclists closely bunched together.

Spiegel appeared to clip the back of another bicycle after experiencing a wobble on the inside and Turnbull, trying to avoid the collision, went high and wide on the track.

However, he miscalculated the angle and crashed into the barrier, resulting in a painful injury for the cyclist.

Unfortunately for the Morpeth-born cyclist, he won't have the chance to add to his silver medal that he won in the sprint event after failing to qualify for the final.

He won silver in the men's team sprint event on Tuesday with Carlin and Ed Lowe. But his DNF meant he would not able to compete for a medal for Team GB.

Australia's Matthew Richardson, Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands and Japan's Kaiya Ota advance instead as they go for a medal, with Team GB's Jack Carlin making the cut.

It brings disappointing end to Turnbull's participation in the Games, having missed out on a medal in the individual sprint. He won the first of his three quarter final contests against the Netherlands' Jeffrey Hoogland.

But he was beaten in the other two races to the line, sending his Dutch opponent through to the semi finals at his expense, as he finished seventh overall in the sprint rankings.
