It's the final day of the Olympics, with the closing ceremony taking place in Paris this evening after two weeks of sporting action. There is still time for more history to be made, though, with a number of medals up for grabs as the Games draw to a close.

Team GB need two more medals to beat their tally of 64 from the last Olympics in Tokyo three years ago. Rose Harvey, Calli Hauger-Thackery and Clara Evans are competing in the women's marathon as the athletics programme comes to an end.

Emma Finucane and Jack Carlin will be in action on the cycling track with a strong chance of finishing in the medal positions for Team GB. Emily Campbell, the first British woman to win a weightlifting medal in Tokyo, will be hoping to repeat the feat before midday.

Paris Games draw to a close

It's been a sensational two-and-a-bit weeks of sporting action in Paris, with four long years to wait until a fresh crop of Olympians rock up to Los Angeles with hopes of clinching gold.

The final stages of the closing ceremony saw performances from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre and Billie Eilish once the show transitioned from Paris to LA.

And that was after Tom Cruise flew down from the Stade de France and sped off on a motorbike.

Plenty to pick through, plenty to digest, and lots of sporting memories to look back on in the pool, on the track, in the velodrome and everything else that comes with the Games.

Tom Cruise flies down from roof of Stade de France

The theatrics are well underway now, and Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has just zip-wired down from the roof of the Stade de France to symbolically carry the Olympic flag from Paris to Los Angeles - the next host city in 2028.

Cruise famously does his own stunts, and thankfully all went to plan here...

Sifan Hassan accepts medal in hijab despite ban

Women's marathon champion Sifan Hassan accepted her gold medal at the closing ceremony on Sunday evening while wearing a hijab.

Female athletes were prevented, by French law, from wearing a hijab at the Games. Hassan won the women's 26.2-mile race earlier on Sunday, setting an Olympic record time of 2:22:55.

The statement made by Hassan at the Stade de France has received widespread attention on social media.

Masked figure returns

Much was made of the mysterious masked figure that featured throughout the opening ceremony just over two weeks ago.

And the built-up tension came crumbling down when the identify of the individual, presumed to be some sort of celebrity, was never revealed.

Well, we're now at the closing ceremony and they've done it again - in a slightly different form, with gold strands emanating from every angle.

Will viewers get answers this time?

Closing ceremony imminent

The Paris Olympics closing ceremony is about to get underway, and there are more megastars in the pipeline after an opening ceremony which starred Lady Gaga.

Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and Red Hot Chili Peppers are all scheduled to perform, with a number of other familiar faces set to pop up throughout the show.

The American national anthem will be sung at the end of the ceremony to symbolise the handover to Los Angeles, which will host the next Games in 2028.

Royal message sent to GB competitors

The King has sent a heartfelt message to those who turned out for Team GB at the Paris Olympics.

British athletes racked up 14 gold medals and 65 medals in total across two memorable weeks of sporting action.

The statement read: "Your achievements, across so many disciplines, were forged from that invaluable combination of raw talent, true grit and hard toil over many years, burnished these past weeks by sportsmanship and team spirit in the finest tradition of the Games.

"To those who missed out on the greatest prizes, you have most certainly not fallen short in the pride that you, too, have generated for your nations.

"As we thank France for hosting such a wonderful tournament and look to the Paralympics ahead, I can only say that you have all been an inspiration."

Team GB boss defends medal haul

Team GB chief Andy Anson has launched a passionate defence of Britain's gold medal haul at the Paris Olympics, despite the fact it reached the lowest point since Athens in 2004.

GB athletes notched only 14 golds in France to leave them seventh in the medal table.

However, their overall medal haul of 65 surpassed that of Tokyo three years ago, and matched the total Team GB won at London 2012.

"It's been an unbelievably competitive Olympic Games," said Anson. "We passed a thousand medals during this event, which is incredible and we have a lot to celebrate.

"The breadth of success is important, in terms of the resonance it has around the country and impact it has on our communities.

"It's frustrating to be seventh in the medal table. We would have liked to have been in the top five again, but the overall number and breadth of medals we've won should be celebrated. So the final message is: Bring on LA."

Finucane completes historic feat at Velodrome

Emma Finucane has become the first Team GB star since Mary Rand in 1964 to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games.

The cycling star won her third medal in Paris on Sunday by taking bronze in the women's individual sprint.

"I feel on top of the world," she told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I wanted to be in the gold final, but I had nothing left to give. To come away with three medals is more than what I could have dreamed of."

Team GB's Campbell speaks out on weighlifting bronze

Emily Campbell claims that her bronze medal in the Paris Olympics women's +81kg weighlifting was just as special as the silver she won in Tokyo.

Team GB's Campbell was up against a star-studded field this time around, with the dominant Lin Wenwen storming to gold.

"Today was a lot tougher than it was in Tokyo," Campbell said. "The standard was so, so high today and I really had to pull it out of the bag.

"This road has been really long. In Tokyo I was new to the sport, I was enjoying things and everything was great. It was a bonus medal. But this one really came from the heart.

"We’ve had a tough year building up, it took 18 months really, but we pulled it out at the right time. I could not be more elated with my performance. It was actually a PB performance, so you can’t really complain when you do that."

Arrest made hours before closing ceremony

French authorities have evacuated the Eiffel Tower and made an arrest after a man was seen climbing the landmark just hours before tonight's Olympic closing ceremony.

The shirtless man was seen scaling the tower, which stands at 330 metres tall, this afternoon.

He was spotted just below the large Olympic rings adorning the monument.

More than 30,000 police officers have been deployed around Paris and beyond to watch over the closing ceremony.

American gymnast to lose Olympic bronze medal

American gymnast Jordan Chiles has been ordered to return the bronze medal she won in the women's floor final.

Chiles came third in the event, behind Rebeca Andrade and Simone Biles, after her score was bumped up by 0.1 following an appeal from her coach.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport have since ruled the judging panel were wrong to allow Chiles' score to be increased as the appeal came outside the one-minute window.

It means Ana Barbosu of Romania will receive the bronze medal retrospectively after being promoted to third place.

Jack Carlin receives medical treatment after frightening crash

Jack Carlin was caught up in a dramatic last-lap crash in the men's keirin final, leaving him in need of medical treatment.

Japanese rider Shinji Nakano lost control of his bike at the last corner, sparking a terrifying crash involving multiple athletes.

Nakano ended up taking out Carlin at full speed, leaving them sprawled across the track as Dutch rider Harrie Lavreysen took the gold medal.

Carlin appeared to be in some discomfort and stayed down for a while as several members of Team GB's medical team rushed to his aid.

He eventually climbed to his feet after being thoroughly examined and was helped to walk to the medical centre for additional checks.

Team GB surpass Tokyo medal tally

Team GB have officially surpassed their medal tally from the last Olympics in Tokyo three years ago.

Emily Campbell won bronze in the women's +81kg weightlifting final earlier today, while Emma Finucane came third in the women's track cycling sprint event.

Their medals have increased Team GB's final total to 65, meaning they will finish the Games with one more medal than they won in Tokyo.

USA basketball team poke fun at Noah Lyles

Team USA aimed a cheeky dig at Noah Lyles after their men's basketball team won Olympic gold with victory over France in the final.

Lyles sparked controversy last year when he criticised NBA teams for calling themselves world champions despite only playing against teams in America and Canada.

After winning the gold medal, the USA basketball team poked fun at Lyles with a subtle dig on social media.

They simply wrote: "Are we the World Champs now?"

Fans were quick to point out that while the American team can rightly call themselves Olympic champions, the current world champions are Germany.

Team GB cyclist narrowly avoids scary collision

Neah Evans narrowly avoided a huge collision after falling off her bike during the women's omnium scratch race.

The 34-year-old was nearly hit at speed by another rider on the last lap after losing her balance and tumbling down the banked final turn.

Evans ended up flat on her back and took a few moments to compose herself before gingerly climbing back to her feet.

She eventually got back on her bike to cross the finish line in last place when the race had long since finished.

Sifan Hassan wins gold in women's marathon

Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands has won the gold medal in the women's marathon, setting a new Olympic record in the process.

She crosses the finish line in a time of two hours, 22 minutes and 55 seconds.

Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia wins the silver medal while Kenyan runner Helen Obiri takes bronze.

Olympic president to step down next year

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, has announced that he will be stepping down at the end of his second term next year.

The 70-year-old, who has held the role since 2013, confirmed on Friday that a new president would be elected in 2025.

He said: "After 12 years in the office of IOC president, our organisation is best served with a change in leadership.

"I am not the best captain. New times are calling for new leaders. Change or be changed."

Team GB athlete makes unusual excuse for losing

Team GB pentathlete Joe Choong believes he would have performed better if his girlfriend was also selected for the Olympics.

Choong won gold in the men's modern pentathlon in Tokyo three years ago but missed out by a significant margin in Paris, placing ninth.

After finishing his event, he said he was frustrated that his partner Olivia Green was not picked by Team GB to compete in the women's modern pentathlon.

"My girlfriend, I wanted to have my family competing with me and that process was really disappointing," he explained.

"I didn't quite understand the decision-making process. It has been difficult to work through that. It made my job a lot harder from a mental point of view.

"I am going to have a couple of months away to clear my head. I need to find love for the sport again."

Imane Khelif files legal complaint over gender row

Imane Khelif has filed a legal complaint in France for online harassment, her lawyer has revealed.

The Algerian boxer, who has been at the centre of a gender row throughout the Olympics, won the gold medal in the women's 66kg category.

Her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, said in a statement that Khelif had filed the complaint for 'aggravated online harassment'.

He added: "The investigation will determine who was behind this misogynist, racist and sexist campaign, but will also have to concern itself with those who fed the online lynching."
