Van Gerwen brushed aside veteran star Gary Anderson in a 6-1 rout at the weekend to secure his place in the final.
He will now want to go one step further and be crowned champion once again.
Speaking after the Anderson match, the 29-year-old told Sky Sports: “I think I played really well, especially early doors.
“Gary couldn't find his form in the beginning and I took advantage of that.
“I didn't give him any time to breathe in this game. After the 5-0 I was getting confident.
“I do a lot to come to this stage but the work is not done yet, I have to do more,” he added.
Smith will prove a stern test for Van Gerwen with fireworks expected during the New Year’s Day showdown.
