Michael Smith breaks down in TEARS before Michael van Gerwen PDC World Darts final
MICHAEL SMITH has been breaking down in tears ahead of the PDC World Darts Championship final with Michael van Gerwen.
Smith, 28, meets hot favourite Van Gerwen in this evening's final at the Alexandra Palace in London.
A £500,000 prize is on offer to the winner and it's got all too much for tearful Smith to take in.
Smith, who will marry his fiancee Dagmara on Saturday, said: "I never cried when my kids, Junior and Casper, were born. What is wrong with me?
"Why am I crying? Every time someone says I'm in the final, I tear up.
"All the sacrifices I've made are paying off. This year has made everything I've done worth it.
"This is my first ranking final and it means a lot. If all the other finals had been ranking, I'd have been higher than I am now.
"I'm not bothered if I'm 100 or first in the world, as long as I get my hands on that trophy for the first time. That's all that matters.
"The wedding has helped me, it has kept my mind off it.
"Every time I've thrown for the match, I've been thinking, 'S***, I get married in six days'.
"I have perfect kids, the perfect missus. That's why I'm playing so well. My life's never been happier."
MVG knocked out Gary Anderson in the semis - the man who has mentored Smith during his rise to the top.
He now has to do what the Scot could not and take off more than one set off the Dutchman.
He added: "I'm there and I want to give everything I can.
"If I get whitewashed, so what? I'll come back next year even stronger.
"That has been the key thing for me. I've been able to drop games or legs and come back a lot stronger.
"Next year, Michael will come back as the defending champion, or I will. That is what matters to me.
"As long as I'm in there, fighting for what I want and for what I think I deserve, I'll just give it everything."
