Ronnie O’Sullivan crashed out of the English Open on Tuesday after a shock first round defeat to China's He Guoqiang. The Rocket was well off the pace in the early stages of the match as he fell 3-0 behind, before clawing back two frames. But He clinched the sixth frame to progress to the second round.

After the match O’Sullivan labelled himself “useless” and ruled himself out of the running to land an eighth world title.

And the likes of Judd Trump and Mark Selby will now be aiming to take advantage of O’Sullivan’s departure in Brentwood.

Trump is the favourite to claim the English Open title after scooping £500,000 by winning the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters earlier this month.

The 35-year-old had a nervy end to his first round victory over Liu Hongyu after seeing a 3-1 lead evaporate. The star ultimately held his nerve to win the decider and set-up a second round showdown with Matthew Selt, with the clash getting underway at 1pm.

Before that, four-time World Snooker Championship winner Mark Selby takes on Joe O’Connor, with John Higgins, Shaun Murphy and current world champion Kyren Wilson also in action throughout the day.

Express Sport will bring you the latest scores as the matches come thick and fast, so follow our live blog below for the latest updates.

O’Sullivan told to play with stronger hand

Ronnie O’Sullivan has been told he will pay the price if he continues to play with his weaker left hand. The Rocket missed a string of pots and also struggled with his safety play during his shock English Open first round defeat to He Guoqiang.

And after the showdown, snooker icon Alan McManus told Eurosport: “He played a lot of left-handed stuff tonight. Ronnie going forward, if he's going to play most of his matches with his left hand, I don't think he's going to win all that often because he paid the price too often tonight.

“Whether that is something he's going to keep in his armoury going forward, we're going to find out. His last shot of the match was a poor safety shot. Going forward, if O'Sullivan is going to play left-handed, I think he's going to pay the price.”

Selby and Wu progress

Mark Selby has completed his rout of Joe O’Connor by clinching the fourth frame to secure a 4-0 victory. The Jester from Leicester eased his way past his compatriot to cement his place in the last-16.

Meanwhile, Wu Yize completed his turnaround against Ali Carter to win the clash 4-2 after finding himself 2-1 down following the opening three frames.

The next four matches will get underway at 1pm, with Judd Trump in action against Matthew Selt.

O’Sullivan reacts to defeat

Ronnie O’Sullivan cut a frustrated figure as he addressed his first round defeat to He Guoqiang on Tuesday.

And the Rocket told The Sun: “I'm absolutely useless, that's why [I lost]. Forget about the Worlds. I'm not even bothered to be honest with you - if I'm going to play rubbish I might as well play left-handed.

“Play left-handed and enjoy it, but be useless, or play right-handed, be useless and not enjoy it. I haven't got long, I'm not going to deny it, I'm not playing well enough. There's no point in even worrying about it - I've just accepted it now which is quite a nice place to be really.”
