Smith finished as runner-up to Van Gerwen in Premier League Darts 2018 and will be gunning to get one over the Dutchman tonight.
He overcame Ryan Searle and Luke Humphries in previous rounds before toppling Nathan Aspinall in the semi-final to guarantee his place for a shot at the trophy.
Speaking after his victory over Aspinall, Smith said: “I've never felt like that ever. I don't know what to say.
"I don't want to cry live on TV. I'm so happy now, I'm in the final and I don't know what to say, sorry.
"Them first two sets I was cruising and he started to come back and I was like 'oh, I've got to start doing something now’
"Nathan got better and better and better but I took the chances as they came.”
