Since then the club have swung between Europa and Champions League competition but have not made it any further.
And Rodgers, who is expected to field an experimental side with six first-team players left at home, says the objective of their European campaign is to develop the side.
"My approach is what I did in this competition when I first came in," he said.
"We played players that needed games and it's my chance to look at some young players as well.
"Back then we finished top of the group and qualified, and that's the objective."

Rodgers also denied that he is under extra pressure to get results on the European front.
"It (the pressure) is the same as it ever has been," he said.
"It's part and parcel of being the manager at such a great club."
