Manchester United are almost certain to sign a new midfielder this summer if Casemiro leaves the club after just two years, according to reports. And the Red Devils are said to have identified West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez as a potential replacement, the latest transfer target with ties to Erik ten Hag.

Casemiro is widely expected to depart in the coming months following a dismal second season as United move to raise funds through player sales.

Saudi Arabia is the 32-year-old's likely destination, and an exit would pave the way for a younger, more athletic option to partner with Kobbie Mainoo.

At the start of the transfer window, United are believed to be prioritising pursuits of a centre-back and striker to replace Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial - both become free agents this month.

But Casemiro's exit would launch a swoop for fresh blood in midfield, and INEOS could shop in the Premier League if the opportunity arises.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Alvarez has been discussed internally as a candidate to replace the Brazil captain this summer.

Ten Hag is said to appreciate the 26-year-old after coaching him across three seasons at Ajax before joining United.

Alvarez left Amsterdam for West Ham last summer in a £35million deal, and Romano adds that any transfer would be difficult due to how important he is to Julen Lopetegui.

The Mexico international would be the latest player to join United during the Ten Hag era with strong links to the former Ajax boss.

He brought Lisandro Martinez and Antony with him to Old Trafford in 2022 for a combined £143m. Another ex-Ajax star, Andre Onana, arrived in a £47m deal from Inter Milan last summer.

Christian Eriksen also has a history with the Eredivisie giants, while Tyrell Malacia, Wout Weghost and Mason Mount are other arrivals with connections to the Dutch game.

Ten Hag's mixed success with his signings as United boss had sparked criticism, with many welcoming INEOS' plans to take control of recruitment by installing a new-look hierarchy.

While Ten Hag is set to sign a new contract at Old Trafford, he will have to accept reduced power when it comes to recruitment and a changed job title from manager to head coach.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants technical director Jason Wilcox and incoming chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth to helm the club's transfer business.

But Ten Hag will welcome United's reported interest in Alvarez, a player he was claimed to be keen to bring to M16 last summer before his switch to West Ham.
