Manchester United were publicly turned down by Wolves striker Matheus Cunha just days after reports emerged claiming that they were prepared to double his wages. The Red Devils have been searching for a striker to complement Rasmus Hojlund, with Erik ten Hag insisting it should be one of the club’s top priorities.

Cunha only moved to Molineux last summer for a £44million fee from Atletico Madrid but has been an instant hit under Gary O’Neil, scoring 12 Premier League goals and his work rate has not gone unnoticed.

The Daily Mirror claimed that the 25-year-old was in United’s sights as Wolves slapped a £60m price tag on their leading man, having scouted Cunha extensively since he arrived in England.

United were even prepared to double his reported £60,000-a-week wages in order to tempt him to join the new INEOS revolution at Old Trafford, but while back in his homeland has seemingly turned down the potential of swapping Wolves for United.

“Whenever I can, I come to accompany you,” Cunha told Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte. “I always want to show that (the affection) is reciprocal. Then we see this rush (Manchester United). But I’m very happy at Wolves.

“My focus is on resting and making the most of it with my family. I’m very happy at Wolves. The focus now is to have better seasons and help the club. God willing, I will continue on this path.”

The news will come as a bitter blow to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co, but they have also been mentioned with the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Victor Osimhen and Joshua Zirkzee but will face significant competition for the trio.

Despite Hojlund’s arrival from Atalanta for £72m less than a year ago, Ten Hag has stressed the need for additional firepower up front to help the 21-year-old in his second season at Old Trafford.

“We need to get a striker in to work alongside Rasmus Hojlund,” the Dutchman said. “I also hope we manage to get another central midfielder and also a replacement for (Raphael) Varane. Then I think things will look very good for next season - with the caveat that the players are fit and stay fit.

“Then you can start playing towards the top four with such an 11. That gives me hope and is also realistic in my eyes.”

However, United have been forced to look elsewhere with Cunha seemingly uninterested at the prospect of leaving Wolves anytime soon, having forged a strong relationship with the club during his short time in England.
