Manchester United are set to keep Erik ten Hag waiting with a decision over the Dutchman’s future not expected imminently. Red Devils chiefs are conducting a season review which will include an assessment of where Ten Hag fits into their plans.

Despite winning the FA Cup on Saturday, Ten Hag’s future hangs in the balance due to a below-par campaign. His side finished eighth in the Premier League, were dumped out of the Champions League group stages, and only qualified for Europe due to their cup triumph over Manchester City.

Ten Hag was widely expected to be dismissed had United been beaten by their rivals in the Wembley showdown. The club’s hierarchy are widely reported to have spoken to potential candidates to replace the manager.

However, the Manchester Evening News claims that United have informed representatives of aspiring Red Devils head coaches that they may still keep Ten Hag after the FA Cup success. There are reportedly figures within the club who maintain that the 54-year-old is the right man to lead the club forward.

A decision on whether Ten Hag will be retained is not expected imminently, though, leaving the former Ajax tactician waiting to learn his fate.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co-chairman Joel Glazer are reportedly leading the season review, with the agenda transcending Ten Hag’s future. Sir Dave Brailsford, INEOS’s director of sport, and United’s new technical director, Jason Wilcox, are assisting with the discussions.

It is unclear whether the FA Cup success will be enough for Ten Hag to keep his job. United produced their best performance in months to defeat City 2-1 at Wembley. Teenagers Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo scored the goals, with youth development a fundamental aspect of Ten Hag’s reign.

Ten Hag has warned United’s hierarchy that if they sack him, he will move to another club and continue to win trophies. He has won two titles - the Carabao Cup and the recent FA Cup - during his time at Old Trafford. The Red Devils also secured a third-placed Premier League finish during his first campaign.

"Two trophies in two years is not bad," Ten Hag said. "Three finals in two years is not bad. I'm not satisfied with it. We have to do better.

"If they don't want me, then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I do."
