Mason Greenwood has hinted that he would like to return to Getafe next season after a successful loan spell in Spain, away from Manchester United. The Red Devils are reportedly ready to part ways with the 22-year-old and are hoping to receive a fee in the region of £40million this summer for his services.

Greenwood has thrived at La Liga club Getafe, scoring eight goals and claiming six assists in 33 appearances on their way to a 12th-placed finish. They have backed him despite angry chants from some supporters of their rivals towards the one-cap England man, who has felt the love in Madrid.

His performances since arriving on transfer deadline day last summer have seen Greenwood named their Player of the Season, with the club confirming his accolade on Tuesday as he prepares to return to Manchester.

"It feels amazing to receive this kind of award," Greenwood said. "I wouldn't be able to get this achievement if it wasn't for my team-mates and the coaching staff. Everybody has done well with helping me to get this award and I want to say thank you to them.

"I think we've done very well. We could have got some extra points here and there to try and push into European places but it hasn't been possible. I feel very happy and comfortable here, it's been an amazing experience."

Greenwood has reflected positively on his time at Getafe and appears to be happy to continue his journey at the club, though a major stumbling block would be the finances involved in taking the forward away from United.

Though the Red Devils are ready to end their affiliation with Greenwood and announced in August that he would not play for the club again, a sentiment largely echoed by the new INEOS hierarchy, they are hoping to receive a sizable fee for his sale.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously said that no official decision has been made on Greenwood’s future, but various reports have claimed that a permanent departure remains the most likely outcome.

Getafe have publicly stated their desire to keep Greenwood for next season on several occasions, though they are aware that a cut-price deal or another loan would be a last resort option for United.

That is despite club president Angel Torres claiming that he expects Greenwood to return to the Spanish team next season. "I think we're 92 per cent (sure) today that he's staying,” Torres said after Getafe’s final day of the season, a 2-1 defeat to Mallorca.

“Nothing has changed, we're dependent on Manchester. There will be no quick news. The idea is that he stays, but it depends on Manchester.”
