The January transfer window is just around the corner, and Premier League clubs are once again finalising their shortlists as they plan to spend big. Speculation is beginning to ramp up with Manchester United, in particular, being linked with several names.
United will have to sell before they can buy but they do have several sellable assets and will hope to move on the dead wood so they can form a new spine in their team, with players in all positions being linked.
Erik ten Hag is said to have prioritised the signing of a new defender next month and would also like to bolster his attack if the opportunity arose. However, Takefusa Kubo, a former Real Madrid wonderkid, is also being heavily linked and he plays as an attacking midfielder.
It seems unlikely, but United could transform their team if they signed a new defender, midfielder and attacker. Chelsea, meanwhile, are on the hunt to sign one of their former players but have been warned it'll take a 'massive' offer to seal a deal.

Aston Villa are set to rival a number of Premier League clubs for the signature of Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The 22-year-old has been one of the Championship's best players so far this season, chipping in with 11 goals and another six assists.
He is said to have emerged as a potential target for Villa, with a number of other top-flight clubs believed to be keeping close tabs on the player.
However, it is said that Leeds have no desire to sell Summerville in the middle of the season as they hunt an immediate return to the Premier League at the end of it.
Anthony Martial is one of several forwards being eyed by Inter Milan ahead of next month's transfer window, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
It is said that United would be open to parting ways with Martial, who has endured a turbulent nine-year spell at Old Trafford.
He will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a non-English club from the start of January, with his United deal set to expire at the end of the season.
West Ham United are weighing up a January swoop for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, a player they have admired for quite some time.
That's according to FussballTransfers, who are reporting that the door is open for Tah to move to England after Bayern Munich rejected the chance to sign him.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer wants his former club to sign David de Gea on a free transfer as injury cover for Nick Pope, who is sidelined with a long-term shoulder issue.
Asked if he would sign free agent De Gea for Newcastle, Shearer told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Yeah, I would. I think Newcastle need a goalkeeper and De Gea is out there.
"I know the salary would be huge but they wouldn’t have to pay a fee for him."
Chelsea are planning a double January raid on Sporting for the services of Ousmane Diomande and Viktor Gyokeres, according to the Evening Standard.
It is said that Chelsea have already reached out to enquire about a potential move for highly-rated defender Diomande.
Gyokeres has also emerged as a target for the Blues after making a brilliant start to life at Sporting since joining the club over the summer.
However, the report adds that both players will only be sold for the full value of their release clauses, meaning that Chelsea would be forced to spend around £156m to sign them.
Raphael Varane would be open to returning to former club Lens next month after being left frustrated with his lack of game time at Manchester United.
That's according to L'Equipe, who are reporting that Varane would be keen on going back to his former stomping ground if he is sold by United next month.
He previously suggested that he would be happy to retire at Lens, saying earlier this year: "I will finish my career either in Madrid, or in Manchester, or in Lens.
"I will not move to another club [other than those], but Madrid seems complicated to me. Players don’t usually go back there. The most likely outcome today is that I will finish [my career] in either Manchester or Lens."

Chelsea, Manchester City and Barcelona have been put on red alert after an Argentinian wonderkid dubbed 'the next Lionel Messi' revealed he won't be signing a new contract with his club.
Claudio Echeverri is attracting all the top clubs, with Manchester City understood to be leading the race.
And now the top teams around Europe will be scrambling to strike a deal for one of the world's prodigious talents because he has revealed he won't be signing a new deal at River Plate.
Echeverri's River Plate deal expires in December 2024, meaning they'll have to cash in on him in the next few windows.
He told ESPN: "I'm not going to renew my contract at River Plate. I'm going to play for the next months and then we see what happens."
His release clause is currently set at £21.6million, a fee that the likes of Chelsea and City could easily afford.
It remains to be seen who snaps the attacking midfielder up but there is huge excitement about the youngster growing in Argentina, with many likening him to Messi. Let's hope we get a glimpse of him in the Premier League soon!
Arsenal may have the perfect secret weapon to save the club millions in their bid to sign Ivan Toney.
Brentford are understood to want a fee between £80m and £100m for their star striker, which could be problematic given Arsenal splashed out well over £200m in the summer.
However, Arsenal might have an ideal sweetener to lower Toney's cost in a player-plus-cash deal.
The Real Madrid board have made their final decision about signing a Manchester United player.
Carlo Ancelotti is keen to strike a deal with Erik ten Hag and the board have now decided whether or not they agree with him ahead of the January window.
Despite Ibrahima Konate's superb performance against Arsenal, Liverpool are reportedly ready to splash the cash on a new partner in crime for Virgil van Dijk.
According to transfer reporter Pedro Almeida, Liverpool are willing to pay Inacio's £52million release clause next month.
The centre-back has been in Liverpool's sights for some time, and talks are said to be taking place with Jurgen Klopp making him a priority January signing.

Man Utd and Chelsea to trigger wonderkid's release clause
Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly both ready to trigger the release clause of Palmeiras wonderkid Estevao Willian.
The 16-year-old has a clause in his contract that could see him snapped up for £52m. He is widely regarded as one of the world's most exciting prospects, and Mundo Deportivo have named United, Chelsea and PSG as potential suitors.
Barcelona would also love to sign him but don't have the financial strength to pull off a deal while United and Chelsea are best positioned and ready to trigger his release clause, according to the same report.
Chelsea have missed out on signing Brazilian wonderkid Gabriel Moscardo.
Todd Boehly has placed an emphasis on bringing young talented players to the club, with the majority of the £1bn he's spent on new signings, involving teenagers of players in their early 20s.
Moscardo was said to be next on their list but Fabrizio Romano claims the midfielder is on his way to PSG.
A fixed fee of £17.3m plus a £1.7m add-on has reportedly been agreed with Corinthians.
The 18-year-old is expected to travel to Paris in the coming days as the clubs work on finalising the deal.
Arsenal have been warned they might not be getting value for money by splashing out between £80m and £100m on Brentford star Ivan Toney.
Mikel Arteta's title challengers could be taken to the next level if they land a prolific forward but England hero Stuart Pearce isn't sure Toney is worth the money.
Tottenham and Chelsea are also after the England international but Pearce has questioned whether they couldn't get better strikers than him for a cheaper price in an exclusive chat with Express Sport.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has reportedly cooled interest in Brighton's Evan Ferguson and is instead eyeing Dominic Solanke of Bournemouth.
Spurs are still desperate to find a long-term replacement for Harry Kane, who left for Bayern Munich in the summer.
Several names have been mentioned including Ferguson, who is widely considered one of the hottest prospects in Europe.
However, he signed a new deal at Brighton earlier this year and would likely now cost north of £100m.
The Sun claim Spurs view Solanke, who has five more Premier League goals than Ferguson this season, as a 'better prospect'.
As things stand, only Son Heung-Min, Mo Salah and Erling Haaland have more Premier League goals than him. The same report says Spurs are keeping a very close eye on him ahead of a potential January transfer swoop.
Chelsea face having so stump up a lot of cash if they want to sign former academy graduate Marc Geuhi from Crystal Palace.
The Sun claim Palace will only sell their star centre-back if a 'massive' offer is made.
The 23-year-old England international first joined Chelsea at the age of 8 before leaving to sign for Palace in an £18m deal back in 2021.
Now Chelsea have been heavily linked with re-signing him but it appears Todd Boehly would have to get his cheque book out again - having already spent over £1bn on transfers and broken the British transfer record twice.
The same report also claims that Tottenham and Newcastle are in for him, so Chelsea could face competition and a potential bidding war.
Manchester United are being linked with moves for a new defender, midfielder and an attacker next month.
Takefusa Kubo is the midfielder being mentioned with United said to be ready to offer him a salary much larger than his current one at Real Sociedad.
The Sun report that Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri is wanted by United, who are looking for a low-cost forward option.
Meanwhile, several defenders have been linked including Jean-Clair Todibo, Giorgio Scalvini and Radu Dragusin.
