Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan suggests United would likely trump all rival suitors should Ten Hag decide to pursue a deal due to their close personal relationship.
West Ham could offer the defender a way out of Old Trafford this summer, and The Athletic claim that a £20m bid has been submitted.
United wasted no time in responding as the proposal was swiftly turned down. And any hopes of an improved offer may not last long, with the Hammers deemed 'unlikely' to put more cash on the table.
According to Sky Sports, there are expected to be developments on the sale of Manchester United next week.
Potential suitors Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are yet to hear back from the Glazers about their final bids. But that is reportedly set to change next week with some form of clarification expected imminently.
Atletico Madrid are reportedly attempting to steal a march on Manchester United in their bid to sign Sofyan Amrabat.
According to TeamTalk, the Spanish side are 'pushing hard' to sign Amrabat this summer. However, the Red Devils remain confident that they will snap up the Morrocan midfielder first and expect shift their priorities to signing him once they have wrapped up their deal for Rasmus Hojlund.
Manchester United have reportedly boosted Erik ten Hag's transfer budget in a reaction to other clubs' summer business.
Ten Hag was handed a £120m budget at the start of the summer and has splashed £107m on Mason Mount and Andre Onana.
And De Telegraaf journalist Marcel van der Kraan claims United have expanded his transfer kitty to help add a striker.

Erik ten Hag wants two top players in each position as he eyes Rasmus Hojlund and Sofyan Amrabat.
De Telegraaf writer Marcel van der Kraan has offered insight into Ten Hag's thinking with his transfer targets.
He told Sky Sports: "In midfield, he wants to bolster it. He wants a bigger squad. He wants a squad where each position has two top players.
"Sofyan Amrabat is the Moroccan-Dutch midfielder who was absolutely brilliant at the World Cup in Qatar. We all saw how he was leading the aggressive side of the Moroccan team.
"He contributed to their success there, and he's one of the players who could do a really good job. Whether it's possible to bring him in, I don't know."

Manchester United should make an audacious attempt to sign Kylian Mbappe on a season-long loan, according to Alan Brazil.
The talkSPORT pundit has called on United to approach PSG with an offer to take Mbappe away from their toxic relationship while he waits to join Real Madrid next year.
He said: "Why doesn't he go to Manchester United for a year?
"You do a deal where you go to PSG and say, 'What's the point of him sitting on your bench sulking and upsetting everyone? We'll take him for a year, we'll pay his wages, we'll look after him.'
"And then he can do what he likes."
