Champions League draw to be re-done after embarrassing Man Utd and PSG error
MANCHESTER UNITED were originally drawn against Villarreal in the Champions League last 16, before they were selected to face Paris Saint-Germain in the first draw.
The draw for the Champions League last 16 has been declared void and will be redone after an embarrassing error saw it descend into chaos. Manchester United were originally drawn to face Villarreal even though the two sides were unable to play each other after qualifying from the same group.
The United ball was pulled out by former Arsenal forward Andrey Arshavin, but had to be put back into the pot.
Instead, Villarreal were drawn to face Manchester City, while United were handed a horror clash with Paris Saint-Germain. United also appeared to be left out of the pot for the draw with Atletico Madrid.
“Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16,” UEFA wrote on Twitter in the aftermath of the original draw.
“As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone at 1500 CET.”
A redraw appeared to be the only logical solution as the blunder resulted in the draw becoming unfair.
