Varane: All you need to know about Man Utd-linked defender
Manchester United are determined to pull off the transfer of Raphael Varane, despite a scarring experience with a Real Madrid central-defender in the past. Back in 2015, Sergio Ramos used the interest shown in him by the Red Devils to negotiate an improved deal with Los Blancos.
When Ramos was still in his late-twenties, a move to Manchester looked well and truly on the cards with bids submitted and the player receptive to the move.
David De Gea was also being prepared as part of the deal, back when the goalkeeper was at the peak of his powers, although the move never materialised.
Given Ramos’ fiery character, Madrid reacted to United’s interest by tying their leader down to an improved deal, leaving the Red Devils high and dry but stemming the tide of a situation which could have turned ugly.
Although it was a bitter blow for United, the Spaniard will be glad he stayed, having claimed another two La Liga titles and three Champions League triumphs, among other accolades.

The good news for United is that an improved offer is not believed to be forthcoming, as Florentino Perez looks to save money and finance a deal for Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland.
As such, Varane’s prospective move to Manchester could progress, with a Madrid contract offer not thought to put a spanner in the works as it did in the Ramos negotiations.
According to many reports, personal terms have already been agreed between United and the 28-year-old.
The transfer fee remains the key obstacle to the deal, with transfer chief John Murtough opening the bidding at around £40million.

For the moment, Madrid are holding out for more, although an improved offer will surely be on the horizon if the player expresses his desire to leave upon his return to the Spanish capital.
United have prioritised signing a centre-back to partner Harry Maguire this summer.
If they are to get Varane in the door, they may need to learn from the mishaps of the failed Sergio Ramos deal in 2015. If they can get past that, they will have their hands on one of the most decorated defenders in Europe.
