Solskjaer has regularly talked up the England international, insisting he’s the best finisher at the club.
And United will be keen to utilise his talents more in the future, meaning Greenwood may now be moved to a more central role.
That is, after all, where Solskjaer has always foreseen the youngster playing in the coming years despite moving him elsewhere.
United know they won’t have Edinson Cavani for the long term, with the 34-year-old approaching the twilight years of his career.
And if Greenwood can stake his claim to lead the line on a regular basis, the Red Devils could potentially shelve interest in Erling Haaland - saving them millions in the process.
With Greenwood and Cavani possibly sharing striker duties next term, that may see Martial moved back to the left wing.
The France international experienced a great campaign in 2019/2020, scoring 23 goals across all competitions under Solskjaer’s watch.
But Martial toiled last term, only finding the net seven times before an injury while on international duty with France brought his campaign to an abrupt end.
His days as a striker now seem numbered.
Solskjaer has made it clear to Joel Glazer that he wants the forward to stay, insisting there’s still more to come from the 25-year-old.

Yet Martial may now be moved back to the position where he was deployed during Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho’s spells in charge.
He’s capable of shining there but, with the No 9 on his back, it speaks volumes about his time at Old Trafford so far.
Martial was signed from Monaco because United felt the Frenchman had the potential to win the Ballon d’Or one day, even negotiating a clause with the Ligue 1 side.
However, the forward has come nowhere close to realising that potential.
Martial may even have just one more year to prove himself, with his erratic and inconsistent performances hampering the side as they look to win the Premier League title.
