According to the Daily Star, United are interested in Tottenham players Lucas Moura and Eric Dier.
Solskajer had hoped he might be able to convince the north London club to part with at least one of these players, as they had both been restricted to making appearances from the bench under former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
However, following the appointment of Mourinho, both Moura and Dier have become integral parts of the Portuguese’s long-term plan at the club.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy made it clear to Mourinho that funds will be limited during the January window, as they still have expensive stadium repayments to make.

Tottenham face a difficult decision regarding the Dane, as he is in the final year of his contract and has expressed no desire to sign a new deal.
As it stands Eriksen is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club in January but United hope they can persuade the playmaker to stay in the Premier League.
Tottenham have reportedly drastically reduced their £80m summer valuation of the midfielder as they now risk the prospect of the player leaving the club for nothing in June.
However, United will also have to battle several other interested teams for the 27-year-old, with Juventus, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid all monitoring the player’s situation.
