Referee Martin Atkinson initially plucked a yellow card out of his pocket to show Son for what was a late and petulant challenge.
After seeing Gomes’ condition, however, Atkinson elected to show Son a red card.
Although Gomes’ wellbeing remained the pertinent issue, many fans took to Twitter to question why Son had been shown red.
“Son red card a clear and obvious error. Where was VAR??” asked one fan.

“Poor son. No way a red card. Think it was the contact with aurier,” said another on-looker.
One viewer commented: “Never a red card... not even a booking #son.”
Another football fan said online: “Feel for Son there. An Gomes obviously.
“Horrible injury. Never a red card for Son, can’t change just cos he landed badly, might even have been Aurier comin in afterwards that did it?”
Other tweets gained a lot of positive reaction regarding what was seen as an unfair decision on Son’s part.

“I know it's not the big issue, but why has Son been sent off there? And why is there no intervention to bring him back on?” questioned one of them.
Another opined: “Son’s tackle silly but not a red for me. Sent off because the injury was so sickening.”
Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher also felt Son was hard done by.
"It's not a red card. Son is just trying to stop him in his tracks and Gomes' foot just gets caught underneath him,” Carragher said live on air.
“Aurier comes in behind but it wasn't either player, really. The challenge from Son forces him to ground and he gets his foot underneath him as Aurier come in."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said on the incident: "It’s not important if it was yellow or red.
"The decision from the referee was yellow but then I think VAR changed it. For me of course it’s unfair. He landed in a bad situation.
"I think Son is devastated because of the consequences. I want to send my best wishes to Gomes.
"What’s important now is that he recovers well. We are all devastated but of course for Everton it is devastating."
