Anthony Gordon reportedly sought a transfer to Liverpool and even discussed the potential move with his England teammates. Earlier this month, the Magpies' player attracted interest from his boyhood club due to Newcastle's struggle to comply with PSR rules which forced the club to address their deficit to avoid a possible points deduction.

However, Newcastle managed to balance their books with other deals before July began and according to Telegraph Sport, Gordon - currently representing England at Euro 2024 - was keen on the move to Liverpool after spending only a year and a half at St James' Park and openly discussed it with his international colleagues.

The ex-Everton star seems eager for a switch to Anfield, and it remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached with Arne Slot's team, reports the Mirror. Despite the efforts of the 23-year-old's agent to negotiate a move, Liverpool reportedly showed lukewarm interest in signing Gordon considering an official bid for Gordon's services had not been made while the numbers discussed in a potential deal were too low for Newcastle to significantly reduce their PSR deficit.

Liverpool's interest in signing the winger was questioned by the club, suggesting that their curiosity in the England international was opportunistic due to Newcastle's financial shortfall which has since been resolved following the sales of Yankuba Minteh (£33million) and Elliot Anderson (£35million) to Brighton and Nottingham Forest, respectively.

After being crowned Newcastle's player of the season in their last campaign, the Premier League outfit is not keen on letting him go for a bargain and while his immediate future remains in the North East, it is uncertain if Liverpool will make another move for him later in the transfer window.

Upon Gordon's return to Newcastle, the club plans to ensure he settles in well after what has been an almost action-less tournament in Germany given he's had only a single outing at the Euros this summer, a brief one-minute appearance in the goalless draw against Slovenia.

The speedy winger's skills have been lauded by numerous fans who believe Gordon should start over Phil Foden on the left wing due to his direct approach and the threat he poses in his preferred position. The Englishman achieved a career-best season with the Magpies this past season, scoring 12 goals and contributing 11 assists in 48 games in all competitions.

His impressive performances at club level led to an England call-up where despite playing just one minute in the competition thus far, the winger collected a new wave of fans after his refreshingly honest interview after the Three Lions' 0-0 draw to Slovenia.

Speaking to the BBC following the game, Gordon said: "It's frustrating because I want to play. I think every player here does. It's difficult because you've got so many good players. But watching from the sideline at any game, at any level, is hard. You just want to come on the pitch because you feel you can make an impact".
