Instead, the former Manchester United manager would place his faith in the likes of Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young and Daley Blind.
Even Marcos Rojo, a centre-back by trade, was at one point ahead of him in the race to become the club’s first-choice left-back.

And the former Southampton star has now praised current Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after winning the club’s player of the month award for March.
“It’s hard to try and pinpoint anything that I’ve changed,” he said.
“I haven’t changed anything massively. I think it’s more down to confidence and enjoying myself again, a lot of which is down to the manager and the way he is with me.
“He’s helped me a lot since he’s come in and I think he’s helped a lot of other players as well.”
