Jermain Defoe: Rangers boss Steven Gerrard praises new signing
Defoe has joined Rangers on an 18-month loan deal and will join up with former England team-mate Steven Gerrard, who became manager of the Glaswegian side last summer.
Defoe and Gerrard will be looking to mount a significant title challenge with the Gers, as they find themselves level with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, having played a game more.
Rangers weren’t the only club interested in securing the experienced forward’s signature, though, as it was reported that London club Palace also lurked.
Defoe was asked about Palace’s approach and if it was something that he considered.
"There was interest, I had to weigh it all up, and I fancied something different to be honest, I fancied a different challenge,” he said.
"It is a massive football club and I am coming into an environment where everyone is confident.
"The Palace one was lingering for years - I know a lot of people down there, Mark Bright, a lot of the players.
“It is obviously a fantastic football club, with a top manager.”

Defoe, however, spoke to Gerrard about a move to Scotland, and made a decision instantly.
"But I spoke to Stevie and decided to come here, because it is a great opportunity for me,” the former Tottenham man added.
"When he got the job, it did make me think a little bit, and so far he is a natural."
Liverpool legend Gerrard also spoke of Defoe’s arrival and had nothing but praise for his former Three Lions colleague.
