Man Utd news: Romelu Lukaku on the WING v Everton? Jose Mourinho backed to make big change
MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho should consider playing Romelu Lukaku on the right of a central striker going forward.
That is according to Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas.
Lukaku is on a run of eight games without a goal for Manchester United.
It is the first real goal drought for the Belgian since his move from Everton in the summer of 2017.
However, other aspects of his game have often been questioned, including his hold-up play.
I would put Rashford to the No 9 and let him play slightly right
But Nicholas says Lukaku's job is made harder because he rarely has team-mates running beyond him when he does hold it up.
He believes Jose Mourinho should therefore start to play Marcus Rashford as the main forward, with Lukaku to the right.
And if Mourinho does not fancy that, Nicholas says Lukaku should be dropped to the bench.
“He’s struggling up there because the service doesn’t come quick enough,” Nicholas said.
“The other thing is, everybody talks about the modern game.
“He is quite an old-fashioned type player if you get it right.
“He’s strong enough to do all that and link-up the play.
“But no one runs beyond him, occasionally Rashford, occasionally Rashford.
“If I was Mourinho, and I’m not, and it’s only my opinion in this, and it’s easy sitting here I know, if you’re going to keep him in the team, I would put Rashford to the No 9 and let him play slightly right.
“Or, you leave him on the bench.
“They need movement, this Man United team need movement.”
United are next in action on Sunday when Everton visit Old Trafford (4pm).
