Everton red card: Phil Jagielka SENT OFF for lunge on Wolves' Jota - was referee correct?
EVERTON received the first red card of the Premier League season as Phil Jagielka fouled Diogo Jota in their clash with Wolves.
Everton were 1-0 up at Mollineux when Jagielka lunged at Jota moments before half time.
The former England centre-back stretched for the ball but got Jota’s ankle as well.
Portuguese forward Jota lay in a heap on the ground as Jagielka was shown an immediate red by referee Craig Pawson.
Everton manager Marco Silva was furious with the decision.
And in the resulting free-kick Ruben Neves smashed home to make it 1-1.
Commentating on the game for BBC Radio Merseyside, ex-Everton plater Ronny Goodlass said: “Phil Jagielka has stretched for it and he has gone late.
“He has tried to rectify his poor touch and it gets away from him.
“It's a lack of concentration and the referee makes his mind up quickly.”
He added: “Had Everton gone in 1-0 at half-time, Wolves would have probably made changes.
“But they've drawn level now and the crowd have been given a lift. You can't give quality players chances like that. The whole game has changed in seconds.”
