Tottenham have condemned the "abhorrent homophobic chanting" heard from some away fans during their 3-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

A statement released by Spurs in the evening asserted they would exert "the strongest possible action" against such repugnant chants, which were reportedly directed at the former Chelsea midfielder who is now at United, Mason Mount, and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

"The club is aware of abhorrent homophobic chanting from sections of our away support at Old Trafford today," read Tottenham's announcement.

"This is simply unacceptable, hugely offensive and no way to show support for the team."

They pledged cooperation with the authorities, stating: "The club will be working closely with the police and stewards to identify anyone instigating or joining in with the chanting we shall take the strongest possible action in accordance with our sanctions and banning policy."

Fans who witnessed any inappropriate behaviour were encouraged to come forward confidentially via email to supporterservices@tottenhamhotspur.com.

Moreover, the club highlighted continuous efforts alongside Proud Lilywhites, their LGBTQ+ supporters' group, to foster an inclusive and welcoming matchday atmosphere.

While acknowledging their dedicated fanbase, Tottenham emphasised the responsibility each supporter holds: "We are justly proud of our superb and loyal support, home and away.

The LGBTQI+ Supporters' Association of Tottenham, Proud Lilywhites, shared their mixed feelings on the match: "Loved what happened on the pitch at Old Trafford; didn't love the homophobic chanting off the pitch.

"We're all Spurs fans just like you. When you sing these songs you're telling us we don't belong; and we do - as much as you do."

On the pitch, it was Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke who netted the goals to ensure an emphatic win for their side, while United's Bruno Fernandes received a direct red card for his challenge on James Maddison shortly before the interval.
