Revealed: The pub that inspired Bake Off Candice's gingerbread showstopper
THIS is the pub immortalised in gingerbread on last week’s Great British Bake Off after contestants were asked to design a show-stopper cake that told a story about their life.
Candice wowed the judges with her pub showstopper
PE teacher Candice Brown, below, spent part of her childhood in the King William IV at Kempston, near Bedford, and wowed the BBC show judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood with her recreation.
Current landlady Joanne Hill, 42, who has run the timber-framed pub with husband Karl, 47, for the past four years, said: “We put the TV on in the bar and it was fantastic. Everybody is talking about it.”
Candice's parents managed the King William IV during the 1990s
Mary Berry says she would eat a bit of carpet on The Great British Bake Off
Her barman son Grant Miles, 18, added: “The gingerbread pub was really artistic.”
Candice’s parents Susan and Paul managed the 16th century pub during the 1990s.
Candice recreated the pub as she remembered it, including the sticky floor
She recreated each detail from how she remembered it – down to a pool table and gingerbread cake to represent the sticky floor.
But Joanne, who is offering a free gingerbread man to any customer who comes in today with a copy of the Sunday Express, said: “The pub has changed a lot since then.”
