BBC writers are said to have removed a Jimmy Savile joke from the original script for hit series Industry as it returns for its third season.

Starring Marisa Abela, Myha'la Herrold, Harry Lawtey, David Jonsson, Ken Leung, Freya Mavor, and Priyanga Burford, the series follows a group of young Bankers as they navigate the competitive world of investment banking in London.

However, writers Konrad Kay and Mickey Down had to leave out some of the most elements they originally intended for the show, including a particularly controversial joke about Jimmy Savile and an erect penis.

A source told The Sun: “Although Industry is now in its third series and viewers will know what to expect from the show, this still would have been a bridge too far for the Beeb.

“Savile still haunts the corporation in many ways, so including any kind of humorous reference to him would have been deeply frowned upon.

“As for the erect manhood, that did feature when series three aired in the US earlier this year. But rules still prohibit that from happening over here, even though it will be broadcast after the watershed.

Jimmy Savile was a British television and radio personality who became famous in the 1960s and hosted various shows, including Top of the Pops and Jim'll Fix It. After his death in 2011, numerous allegations of sexual abuse surfaced, revealing a history of misconduct that spanned decades.

Season three of the Industry premiered in the U.S. on August 11, with new episodes airing each Sunday evening until the finale on September 29.

This led to outrage from fans who have aired their disappointment on X about having to wait for season three of the beloved show.

One fan recently said: "More than a little miffed that, living in UK, I can't yet watch this joint BBC/HBO show, written by two Brits, with 75 per cent British cast and have to wait until some unspecified time for BBC to show it."

Another fumed: "Imagine my surprise when I find out season three is already airing in the US but not here in the UK. It's literally a BBC show."

A third added: "I cannot believe Industry, a show set in London with so many British actors, premiered in the US two months before it premieres in the UK? We were episode for episode with America for Succession, but not this? If I see spoilers HBO, you will pay.”

Industry will return for its third season on Tuesday 1 October. All eight episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am, with the third season airing on BBC One with episode one at 10.40pm.
