GMB: Richard Madeley cuts off Rachel Reeves

Richard Madeley had the final word as he slammed Rachel Reeves over the Labour freebies row. The Labour party have come under fire after prime minister Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner recently received luxurious gifts from donors.

The deputy prime minister could face a parliamentary standards investigation after being accused of failing to declare a trip to New York which was paid for by a multimillionaire peer.

Meanwhile Mr Starmer was gifted Taylor Swift tickets purchased by the Premier League. The row was addressed on Monday's instalment (September 23) of Good Morning Britain, hosted by Richard and Susanna Reid.

Richard, 68, kicked off the interview by listing the gifts Labour party members have received, including clothes worth £7,500 that the chancellor herself was given. Defending this, Ms Reeves claimed she was gifted the clothes by an old friend who wanted to support her during the election.

"I was very grateful for that support. We declared it in the proper way. I never planned to continue this during government but it was something that was very beneficial to me during the campaign," the 45-year-old explained.

Richard and Susanna probed the politician on the difference between Labour's actions and that of the previous government, referencing a tweet made by Angela Rayner which saw her call out Boris Johnson for accepting gifts from Tory donors in 2021.

Ms Reeves responded by claiming that Labour now hold themselves to the "highest standards" when making decisions around tax and spending as well as any issues surrounding conflicts of interests.

She continued: "But let me give you an example of something that I'm setting out in my conference speech today to get a grip of the cronyism that we did see under the previous government."

"The point is the hypocrisy is now," Susanna interjected, asking once again why it is acceptable for Labour MPs to accept donations by not the Tories. Ms Reeves claimed Labour will be doing things differently to the Conservative government, hitting out at Boris Johnson for receiving donations for wallpaper in his flat which he didn't declare.

Ms Reeves went on to say that the biggest difference is people who previously donated to the Conservative party would receive government contracts and money in return, something she claimed Labour won't be doing.

This led Richard to question why Lord Alli would gift Angela Rayner a holiday to New York, suggesting it had something to do with the No 10 pass he receieved.

"Well I expect, Richard, many of your viewers and maybe you have stayed at friends' apartments in the past and I think it is reasonable that you own a home in a beautiful city that you lend it to your friends to have a holiday," Ms Reeves replied.

Hitting back, Susanna declared: "The last time I checked, I don't make government policies and I can't hand out passes to number 10 which may lead to an influence on government policy. It's a completely different set of circumstances."

Ms Reeves went on to say that she does not begrudge government ministers for accepting tickets to concerts or football games, as long as it is properly declared.

"Well you may not begrudge it, but the voters do," Richard said. "You don't seem to be in step with public opinion about this at all."

The presenter abruptly thanked Ms Reeves, who was unaware the interview had been brought to an end as she attempted to continue. "I'm so sorry we're out of time, but thank you for being with us this morning," Richard quipped.
