BBC Only Fools and Horses’ Damien Trotter actor is unrecognisable 20 years after show

The iconic BBC sitcom is a cherished classic, but there's one particular cast member whose transformation has left people in disbelief.

Only Fools and Horses is a cherished BBC sitcom that has delighted viewers since 1981, following the hilarious misadventures of the Trotter brothers, Del Boy and Rodney, played by actors David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst respectively.

Throughout the series, fans witnessed the incredible transformation of their favourite characters, but they've also seen the actors behind those roles evolve in remarkable ways after the BBC series concluded.

But one transformation that has particularly caught viewers’ attention is that of Benjamin Smith. Following his role in the beloved comedy, the actor who is known for his portrayal of Damien Trotter, Del and Raquel's son, continues to showcase his incredible talent starring in various roles in both television and film.

At 34, the TV star has made his mark in some of Britain's biggest shows, including the film Nowhere Boy. He gained recognition as Donny in Skins and portrayed Tegs in EastEnders.

His impressive acting credentials also include appearances in Channel 4's cult classic Teachers, E4's Misfits, and the ITV detective drama Scott & Bailey. He also played a journalist in the gritty Netflix miniseries Resistance and Rebellion.

Opening up about his character on Only Fools and Horses, the actor says he views Damien as a contemporary version of Del Boy, describing him as a "jack the lad" based on references from the show. He also imagines Damien as a young man who stays current with gangsta rap and modern culture.

He once said: "I think Damien is a modern young Del Boy. Perhaps we never actually saw him growing up but all the references we get from the show from when he was younger he seemed like a real 'jack the lad'.

"So I'd imagine that Damien is a modern young version keeping up-to-date with gangsta rap and all that culture."

It comes after comedy legend Sir David Jason once opened up about how was almost didn't get the part in the show after auditioning for a part in Dad’s Army.

However, the 84-year-old TV veteran was later rejected from the series, as producers claimed he didn’t have “star quality” at the time. Jason once admitted: "I was cast at 12 o'clock and sacked by three."
