Vernon Kay has revealed that he unwittingly "ruined" a "very limited edition" golf club worth thousands of pounds.

While speaking about golf on his radio show on BBC Radio 2 this morning (August 30), the former Family Fortunes star opened up about an awkward incident that occurred this week at the Betfred British Masters.

Vernon was "larking about" with Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke and Dan Walker when a man spotted the former model's lavish driver and approached the presenter to let him in on a fact about the F1 club.

He said: "Speaking of golf, I was at the British Masters on Wednesday with Anton du Beke and Dan Walker. We don't really... we're supposed to play golf, but Anton's a bit of a clown.

"I'll be honest with you, he's a funny dude, and then Dan. I mean, Dan's got a wicked sense of humour. So, we kind of... the golf becomes secondary to larking about. It's like three kids and a professional golfer."

He continued: "It's like the professional golfer has now got his three naughty sons to look after. We had a really, really good time, and then someone told me; someone took a look at my driver, my golf club."

Vernon explained: "However, mine is (has) been built by a Formula One racing team, the Red Bull team, and a fella came up to me and went, 'I can't believe you're using that'. I said, 'Why not?'

"He said, 'You do realise that's a limited edition - a very limited edition? They're now worth several thousand pounds'. I'm like, 'Uhh, sorry, what did you say?' I'm like, 'No way!'

"I've completely re-gripped it, put a different shaft in; basically, I've ruined it. But you know what, it plays beautifully, and I'm so pleased with it. I didn't realise."

Vernon, who also hosted Just the Two of Us and Beat the Star, is a keen golfer and often plays on the Legends Tour Celebrity Series, according to the official website.

In 2021, the Mirror reported that the former I'm A Celebrity star accidentally smashed his windows while practising his beloved sport in his garden during lockdown.

Vernon, 50, who has two daughters, Phoebe and Amber, with his wife, Tess Daly, explained that he had to contact a glazier to repair the broken glass.

The couple got married in 2003 after a romance developed on the set of T4, with the pair now living happily in the Buckinghamshire countryside in Beaconsfield.

In March, it was reported that Tess and Vernon have space at their home for Tess' Shetland ponies, a large kitchen, a gym and a pool, with the pair even growing their own fruit during lockdown.

The Betfred British Masters, hosted by Sir Nick Faldo, is a professional golf tournament that's currently underway in The Belfry Hotel and Resort in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.
