GB News reporter interrupted by German official in Berlin

GB News reporter Christopher Hope was prevented from completing a live report about the Prime Minister's visit to Berlin by German officials who accosted him on air.

He shared a clip of the incident to X, formerly known as Twitter, which showed a person intervening as he reported back to the studio live from the red carpet as Sir Keir Starmer, 61, walked a red carpet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, 66, at the Chancellery.

"This is the moment when a German official stopped my reporting on Sir Keir Starmer's visit to Berlin for @GBNEWSlive on air (we had been told we could film and report from where I was standing). I'll be back on @GBNEWS at 10am," he captioned the video.

Hope was reporting live from the red carpet, as a brass band played behind him to welcome Starmer.

However, when a woman approached him, he became distracted trying to deal with her as the host in the studio said: "Being interrupted there. They seem to be concerns about his proximity to the red carpet."

“Are you okay to carry on?” the studio presenter could be heard saying while Hope continued to speak to the official.

“We’ll take it from here,” she added before the live broadcast was cut. Following the bizarre on-air mishap, GB News viewers have come out in their droves to debate the moment.

One user of X typed: “Was it an area reserved for journalists?,” with Christopher replying in the affirmative.

A second user typed: “Wow, @christopherhope! Just got stopped from reporting on @Keir_Starmer's visit to Berlin for @GBNEWS live on air? That's quite a moment! No 10 said it was okay to film and report from where you were standing, but the German official had other plans”

“Obviously a security concern from you being too close to the PM and the Chancellor,” someone else replied. “No problem, just move back a bit and crack on. No need to make a fuss about it.”

A fourth wrote: “This is getting ridiculous.”

Starmer is currently in Berlin to embark on a series of meetings and start talks with Scholz on a new co-operation treaty.

The pair are also due to discuss Brexit as the Labour government looks to “reset” relations with Europe and cover access to North Sea trade.

Following his jaunt in Germany, the PM will head to Paris to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron.

He is also due to attend the 2024 Paris Paralympics opening ceremony, starting at 7pm BST.
