Avoidance: Trailer for comedy show with Romesh Ranganathan

A BBC comedy show has come to an end after just two series, as confirmed by presenter and actor Romesh Ranganathan. Hit BBC show Avoidance was first broadcast on the Beeb in June 2022, but the TV star confirmed that it will not be returning for a third series.

Romesh played the lead character Jonathan and has also helped to write the programme. He admitted that the show had been based on the same format as iconic show The Office, which only aired for two six-episode series, as well as Christmas specials - which were highly acclaimed.

Speaking to Tom Davis on his podcast, the comedian explained: “Thankfully the commissioners have taken care of that for me. ‘How come you didn’t do a third series of that sitcom?’

"‘Oh cause we just thought the story was told. We’re following The Office model – just like two and done’.”'

Avoidance was a comedy series about a man with severe conflict avoidance issues who is forced to change for the sake of his son. The show's cast also included Jessica Knappett in the role of Jonathan's ex-wife Claire.

Jonathan’s life revolved around his nine year-old son Spencer, and he always deferred the big and small decisions to his partner Claire. So when Claire asked him to leave, Jonathan realised he has no home, no friends and no ambition.

Except one: to try to preserve his son’s happiness in the face of his parents’ break-up. So the character took Spencer and ran away.

However, he only got as far as the home of sister Danielle (Mandeep Dhillon) and her wife Courtney (Lisa McGrillis). Over the course of the series, the unlikely foursome gradually became a loving but utterly dysfunctional family unit.

Series two of the BBC show welcomed exciting additions to the ensemble including Harry Potter actor Matthew Lewis, who is best known for playing fan favourite Neville Longbottom, who joined the show as a character named Brett.

Irish comic and actress Aisling Bea also took on the role of Megan for the later episodes.

Further newcomers to the cast included Louise Ford, Olivia Tennant, Alex Ranganathan, Paula Wilcox and Michael Spicer.
