Mary Berry made a confession about her obsessions to comedian Joe Lycett.

In 2020, the 89-year-old appeared on Joe's Obsessions podcast alongside comedian Holly Walsh. Minutes into the podcast, Joe queried the two women on whether they believe they are "obsessive types".

When the former Bake Off star confessed she isn't, Joe sarcastically responded: "You're on the right show". Later in the episode, Mary revealed her biggest obsession is her dog, Darcey.

The Cocker Spaniel is named after ex-Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell. Explaining the reason behind this, Mary said: "Because she is very light footed and she's very beautiful."

It comes after Dame Prue Leith revealed she almost didn't apply to replace Mary on The Great British Bake Off.

Mary announced she had quit the programme in 2016 after the BBC lost the contract to broadcast the show and it moved to Channel 4. Her reason for leaving was out of loyalty to the BBC.

Restaurateur Prue, 84, replaced Mary after her departure and has been a judge on the cooking competition ever since. However, someone else almost landed Prue's spot as she initially dismissed the idea of starring on the show.

Speaking on the Sliding Doors podcast with Jennie Becker, Prue recalled: "I just jumped at it. I had begun to think about it, once I knew Mary Berry was not going to go on. I thought, 'Oh, I’d love that job", but I dismissed the thought."

She added: "I thought: "They’ll get someone younger, someone more... probably a young Asian chef or something, that would tick all the diversity boxes and stuff’. But no, they chose me.

When Bake Off made the move to Channel 4, Sue Perkins, and Mel Giedroyc also announced they wouldn't be returning. At the time of Prue's arrival, she revealed viewers didn't warm to her.

Back in February, Prue told The Times: "Oh, I hate my voice. It’s too posh. When I replaced Mary Berry on Bake Off someone on Twitter said: "Oh no, not that posh b**ch", and I sort of agreed with her. But yes, Americans seem to like it."
