Charlotte Hawkins was quick to defend her segment on Good Morning Britain after Ed Balls took a playful jab at her news bulletin.

The seasoned broadcaster, 49, had presented a quirky piece showing meerkats predicting England's win against the Netherlands during the Wednesday (July 10) instalment of the ITV morning programme.

She pointed out that the meerkats at an East Sussex zoo were given a choice between two buckets of nuts, each adorned with the flags of England and the Netherlands. The critters overwhelmingly chose the bucket with the England flag.

Yet, it seemed co-hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls were less than impressed by the furry forecasters' abilities.

At the time, Susanna quipped: "Mystic animals should not be in news bulletins Charlotte Hawkins" as both she and Ed chuckled over the remark, while Ed added: "Clutching at straws.", reports the Mirror.

Reacting with mock shock, Charlotte retorted: "Ooh harsh!" before Susanna interjected, suggesting that if the meerkats' prediction turned out to be accurate, they should embrace it and back the team. She continued: "I don't mean to rain on the meerkat's parade."

In a twist of fate, the so-called mystic meerkats proved their mettle as England triumphed over the Netherlands with a 2-1 victory, securing their spot in the final against Spain this coming Sunday (July 14).

During the episode on Thursday (July 11), Charlotte couldn't resist pointing out that the meerkats had predicted correctly, though Ed remained sceptical. She even told Ed: "Take that look off your face, the meerkats called it right" to which the former politician humorously responded: "I'm hoping they don't work Sundays. What happens if they get the other way? We don't want to know. Retire the meerkats."

Earlier in the show, Ed seemed to take a playful jab at Andi Peters' outfit as he presented the latest competition segment live from the Love Island villa.

Speculating about what Andi might be wearing in the sunshine, Ed quipped: "Let's hope he's got a better dress sense than yesterday."

Andi, clad in a red vest, feigned offence at Ed's remark before enthusiastically discussing his live broadcast from the famous villa, currently housing the remaining contestants of the ITV2 dating show.

This follows Andi, 53, sporting a striking matching shirt and shorts set the previous day as he explained how viewers could win a staggering sum of money.
