Susanna Reid has declared she's off for a summer break from her anchor role on Good Morning Britain.

The 53-year-old host has let her loyal ITV breakfast show followers know that she will be stepping back from the screen until September, though she teased that she might make an occasional appearance in the interim.

Revealing her temporary departure at the close of Wednesday's (July 10) programme, Susanna assured her co-presenter Ed Balls and the viewers that the GMB team, including Charlotte Hawkins, would keep things running smoothly.

Susanna announced: "I'm going to say goodbye because it's now time for me to go off on a break, which means I say goodbye to you at home. You never know, I might pop up in the meantime, but otherwise I will be back in September! ".

Ed playfully protested: "Do you have to? " and implored: "Can't you just stay for a bit? " Susanna comforted him with the promise that he was in "good hands" while she was away. She concluded her announcement with a spirited "I've got to say bye" and a rousing "Come on, England" in support of the national team's Euro 2024 semi-final bout with the Netherlands tonight, reports the Mirror.

This news follows a moment of confusion shared between Susanna and Ed after Charlotte Hawkins delivered a quirky news snippet about the upcoming football game.

Wrapping up her segment, Charlotte said: "In case you were wondering how the football is going to go tonight, I have the answer."

She then amused viewers with a tale of a group of mystic meerkats from an East Sussex zoo who had apparently foreseen an English triumph over the Dutch, choosing their prediction by selecting from two buckets of nuts.

The meerkats at the London zoo made a patriotic choice when presented with flags of England and the Netherlands, flocking to the St George's Cross. Susanna and Ed, however, were not entirely convinced by this quirky method of predicting football outcomes.

Susanna skeptically remarked: "In case you're sceptical about this, Susanna I can see that look on your face. So far, the predictive pack have correctly picked all of England's results."

She continued with confidence: "So, I am sticking with the meerkats. It's going to be a win for England." A moment of silence followed before Susanna questioned the validity of the Dutch prediction, asking if there were even any nuts in their bucket.

Charlotte Hawkins defended the meerkats' honour, reminding them of Paul the octopus's past success in predicting football matches, but Susanna was having none of it, exclaiming: "Mystic animals should not be in news bulletins Charlotte Hawkins! " Their banter continued with laughter, while Ed Balls chimed in, suggesting they were "Clutching at straws."

Charlotte feigned shock, replying: "Ooh harsh! " Susanna then interjected, advocating support for the team if the meerkats' prediction turned out to be accurate, albeit adding: "I don't mean to rain on the meerkat's parade."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
