This Morning slammed for 'lying about being live' as sign of pre-recorded show is exposed

The popular ITV show decides to pre-record some of its episodes, but fans saw through the move due to spotting one major sign.

ITV's This Morning has been criticised in the past after appearing to pretend a pre-recorded episode was live.

On The Rest is Entertainment podcast, journalist Marina Hyde recounted a moment when This Morning stars Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield presented a festive episode of the show as if it was a live feed.

However, eagle-eyed fans spotted a number of "tells" that the show had in fact been recorded ahead of its broadcast date.

Marina explained the episode was aired in 2020, when London had been moved into the "Tier Three" coronavirus rules, meaning people were told to work from home, but during the broadcast, they could be seen walking past the studio on the way to work.

She explained: "I remember in Covid actually, This Morning, and I don’t know why they did this, just say it was a pre-record.

"They had a Christmas Day episode, it was Phil and Holly at the time and they were all dressed up, and they could just say it was pre-recorded because no one thinks you’ve come in on Christmas Day.

"But then there were people walking past all the windows on the way to work and also by that time, we were in something called the tier system, and London was moved into tier one, which meant you could not go to work, and there were all these tells.

"But the main tell is that, of course they haven't."

This Morning has regularly faced criticism for its decision to air a pre-recorded festive episode on Christmas Day.

At the time of the 2020 broadcast, one fan tweeted: "Why are #ThisMorning pretending that the show is live."

While another added: "Not live. You can tell by subtitles."

Marina's co-star Richard Osman revealed "almost all TV shows are done in advance," explaining his own show, House of Games, had concluded filming the rest of its 2024 episodes already.

He explained: "Almost all shows are done in advance. I've been in TV long enough we were always told don't have questions about the Queen Mother, that's how long I've been around."

He went on to add: "Obviously you record things in advance, now with House of Games we can play them out of order. We can’t play a week out of order, so Tuesday has to follow Monday, but in terms of the episodes, we can record them out of order, play them out of order.

“If you’re doing something like Countdown or Pointless, where it’s returning contestants and there’s a narrative, everything has to be in the order that you’re doing it."
